The moden Olympic Games continuing a much older tradition of human competition.
Introduction

The Modern Olympic games were re-started in 1896 and are held every four years.  The Olympics now represent the pinnacle of sporting achievement.  Separate winter games have been held since 1924 and are also held every four years, but two years out of phase with the summer games. The games are organized and run by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Timeline
    0396  CEThe ancient Olympic Games were held at intervals beginning in 776 BC until about 396 AD when they were abolished by Roman emperor Theodosius I after Greece lost its independence. The modern Olympic Games were started in 1896.
