Introduction

George Eliot was the pen name used by the English novelist Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880), one of the most important writers of European fiction. Her masterpiece, Middlemarch, is not only a major social document but also one of the greatest novels in the history of fiction. She was reared in a strict atmosphere of evangelical Protestantism but eventually rebelled and renounced organized religion totally.

Timeline
 22 Nov 1819  CEMary Ann Evans (1819-1880), also known as Marian Evans and George Eliot, was born at Arbory Park in Astley near Coventry. She was the gifted daughter of Robert Evans, the Warwickshire estate agent for the Earl of Lonsdale.
    1836  CEMary Ann Evans' mother died and Mary (George Eliot) took charge of the family household.
    1851  CEAfter the death of her father, Mary Ann Evans' (George Eliot) became subeditor of the 'Westminster Review'. She contributed many articles, and came to know many of the literary people of the day.
    1854  CEMary Ann Evans (George Eliot) began a long and happy union with G. H. Lewes. She regarded thire relationship as marriage, though it involved social ostracism and could have no legal sanction because Lewes's estranged wife was still living.
    1858  CEMary Ann Evans published her first collection of tales, 'Scenes of Clerical Life', under the pseudonym George Eliot.
    1859  CEMary Ann Evans publishes her first novel, 'Adam Bede', under the pseudonym George Eliot. It is a tragic love story in which the model for the title character was Eliot's father.
    1860  CEMary Ann Evans publishes the novel, 'The Mill on the Floss', a story of destructive family relations, under the pseudonym George Eliot.
    1861  CEMary Ann Evans publishes the novel, 'Silas Marner', under the pseudonym George Eliot.
    1863  CEMary Ann Evans publishes the novel, 'Romola', under the pseudonym George Eliot.
    1866  CEMary Ann Evans publishes the novel, 'Felix Holt', under the pseudonym George Eliot.
    1871  CEMary Ann Evans publishes the novel, 'Middlemarch', under the pseudonym George Eliot.
    1876  CEMary Ann Evans publishes the novel, 'Daniel Deronda', under the pseudonym George Eliot.
    1878  CEThe relationship between Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot) and George Henry Lewes ended upon his death. Lewes was married (his wife was unbalanced), and although he never got a divorce, their relationship had continued.
  6 May 1880  CEAfter the death of George Henry Lewes in 1878, Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot) married John Cross, an American banker who was 20 years younger. She died just a few months later.
 22 Dec 1880  CEMary Ann Evans (George Eliot) died in London. The cause of her death was a kidney illness. She wanted to be buried in Westminster Abbey, but her wish was rejected and she was buried in Highgate Cemetery instead.
