World War II (1939-1945)

View or Print as PDF View or print as a PDF
The world war instigated by Adolf Hitler which touched every part of the globe.

With the invasion of Poland by Germany in 1939, the beginning of the second world war was set to be the first truly global conflict involving most nations of the world.  The entry of the Japanese, and after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Americans in 1941 changed the direction of the war in a dramatic way.

As the conflict raged over the theaters of Europe, Africa and the Pacific there were many times when the Allies could have lost the war, but final victory for the European and African theaters came in 1945.  The end of the war in the Pacific theater came a few months later and was precipitated by the use of the Atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The post-war political map changed country boundaries in a way that has caused border pressures that are still an issue today.
