St Hilda of Whitby

    0614  CEPrincess Hild (St Hilda of Whitby) was born. She lived at the court of her great-uncle Edwin of Northumbria.
    0627  CEHild and Edwin were baptised at York on Easter Eve by the Bishop Paulinus. Hild became a nun and was in charge of the work for the building of St. Hild's church in South Shields.
    0649  CEHild transferred to Hartlepool to succeed Abbess Hieu.
    0657  CEHild founded a double monastery (for monks and nuns) at Whitby.
    0664  CEThe Synod of Whitby brings the English church into alignment with Rome rather than having it resemble the Celtic Christianity rooted in Ireland. The synod was convened by Hild (Hilda), head of the double monastery of Streaneschalch, at Whitby.
    0680  CEHild (later Saint Hilda) died.
